Carlos C. Camarena

Master Distiller & Co-Founder of Tequila Ocho

Fifth Generation Tequilero and Third Generation Master Distiller at La Alteña Distillery, Carlos was born in Mexico City on Nov 16 1963, being the eight out of nine children born and raised by Don Felipe Camarena Orozco and María Dolores Curiel; he lives all of his childhood in the City of Arandas, Jalisco where he starts learning about agave and tequila under Don Felipe’s command, and when the time comes he moves back to Mexico City to attend college.

Carlos graduated on Agriculture Engineering at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and he was granted in 1998 the MEDAL OF MERIT for having gotten the highest qualifications on his generation in college.

Back in Arandas, Jalisco, he starts working at the family business, being in charge of the Agave Tequilana Weber family fields and also immediately he is actively involved on the activities of the Cámara Nacional de la Industria Tequilera (Tequila National Chamber), participating on diverse committees.

In January 1990, Carlos gets married with his actual wife, Mrs Monica Verdi, and they have three children: Fany, Marifer and Karla.

By middle 1990, together with other industrials of the tequila sector, becomes founder partner of the Instituto del Tequila A.C., whose primarily goal was to defend the quality and the image of tequila both nationally and internationally, as well as to  promote the image and consumption of only 100% Agave Tequila bottled at origin.

Also in September of 1990, he is part of a small group of tequila producers whom actively participated in meetings and hearings held in Washington, D.C. with the USTR (Office of the United States Trade Representative) and the Generalized System of Preferences of the World Commerce Organization, until they achieved in October of the same year that the 100% Agave Tequila bottled at origin could be imported into the USA free of import taxes, same treat that was already given for years to tequila imported in bulk (Tequila Mixto or Non-100% Agave).

In 1992 Carlos is appointed CEO and Master Distiller of Tequila Tapatío S.A. de C.V., position that keep having nowadays. With such position Carlos has being Proprietary Counselor at the Tequila Regulatory Council and the National Chamber of Tequila Industry. 

Carlos participated in the meetings held at Dirección General de Normas of the Ministry of Economy of Mexico to review and adecuate the Norma Oficial Mexicana for Tequila, and he signed as wittness the “Reconocimiento a las Denominaciones de Origen Tequila y Mezcal” made by the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, in May 1997.

During his time as CEO of Tequila Tapatío S.A. de C.V., the company has quadrupled its annual production & sales, and has achieved international reputation for the quality of the tequilas produced at La Alteña Distillery, which now are exported to several countries in the five continents.

In 2005, Carlos and some members of his family acquired another tequila producing company: Cia. Tequilera Los Alambiques S.A. de C.V., moved production to La Alteña Distillery and in 2009 Carlos is voted Chairman of the Administration Comitee of such Company, position that keeps holding.

On a personal level, Carlos C. Camarena Curiel was awarded in 2005 with the “Distiller of the Year” prize at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, was granted the title of “Industial Tequilero del Año” (Tequila Industrial of the Year) by the National Chamber of Tequila Industry in 2009, received a Gold Star from the World Marketing Organization (2009) and was also awarded as “Industrial Distinguido” (Distinguished Industrial) in 2010 by President of Mexico Felipe Calderon.

Some of the most important international accolades and awards have being granted to the 100% Agave Tequilas produced at La Alteña Distillery under Carlos’s personal supervision.
